  3. Ciao! Michele here and I love Italian food - pasta & risotto's in particular. I have been on holiday to New Caledonia which is a island that speaks both French, English and Melanese. New Caledonia is about 4 hours in a plane so you may want to find out why they speak French when France is a long way away (20 hours in a plane)..
general information can be found at http://www.newcaledonia.co.nz/things-you-should-know

  9. Good evening Mon and Room 14, Simone's cousins have a global connection to Tanzania we fund a child through World Vision there. The girl we support has sent us a card with a lovely drawing on it, she wants to be a nurse when she gets bigger. Life there would be harder than in New Zealand, no running water, no medical centres, no Smiggles ! Have fun learning.

  12. Hi Simone, this is John and I am living in Dubai, United Arab Emirates. Dubai is a now a city with a similar population to Auckland, however just 30 - 40 years ago ( when your parents were your age ), Dubai was a fishing village, perhaps something similar in size to Whitianga on the Coromandel - although not as beautiful of course. Now it is one of the fastest growing cities, with half of all the building cranes in the world.

  13. Hi Simone - Uncle John here - when touring the USA for a lifeguard competition representing NZ I went down as well to Mexico. We went to 10 beaches and competed against the lifeguards there. One beach they filmed BayWatch a popular TV show in the 1980's. In Mexico you had to take your own water as the drinking water there was not safe. In California, nobody made their own breakfast they would go to cafe's and have pancakes and bacon. Tortillos were eaten for breakfast, lunch and dinner in Mexico it was good to get home to steak and 3 vegetables.

  14. Simone's Aunty and Grandfather went to Ireland in 2000. Grandy hadn't been back for over 30 years. I enjoyed the trip as I found part of my heritage and found Ireland to be quite similar to New Zealand. I really enjoyed the Giant's Causeway and Killarney Lakes (so blue)..Northern Ireland and finding out my father's and family history was very special.

Lindy Loo here. All of our family are connected with Poland as this is where our nana and Grandy (your great nana and Grandy) descended came from. Jaxon, Daim and I are also connected to Australia and England on the other side of our family. Mum has been helping a cousin from England do a family tree and there is a book showing all the various relatives. We have some Samoan cousins who live in Wellington so have a connection to Samoa and their culture too. We have two cousins in Australia, Jonathan and Aunty Sonj (and their families). Lucky things.
In NZ, we have cousins in the North and South Islands. North Island cousins live in Auckland, Wellington, Palmerston North and Inglewood, and our South Island cousins are in Westport and Christchurch. We're sorry we missed seeing you on the weekend. Hope swimming and piano went well!

  33. Hi Simone, this is from Grandy. I was born in Millisle IRELAND (County Downs, near Belfast). I used to be in the Merchant Navy and did a lot of travelling... PORTSIDE EGYPT (where there is an interesting manmade canal shortcut. Ships had to gather at Portside to form a convoy so the ships could go through canal in single file); at the bottom of the red sea (ADEN YEMEN) ships would load up with oil. I remember once we wanted to go ashore for lunch but there were so many goats and chickens on the main street, we didn't bother; We loaded with coal in Norfolk Virginia USA bound for Bueno Aires ARGENTINA. When passing Bermuda the engine room broke. Pirates frequented that area. We took a taxi around the island. Stopped at HONG KONG where we could buy things cheaply. I have also been to KOREA/JAPAN/SINGAPORE/SRI LANKA/ITALY/CYPRUS. I would love to tell you all about it one day. Hope this helps with your project.
